Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s public health chief, taking leave of absence for medical treatment, but continuing to advise on public health as an academic advisor. She was appointed to the Public Health Council by the former government following the lead of Ontario’s former premier, Dalton McGuinty.
Dr. Michael Rainsford, who served on the Ontario Health Minister’s advisory council. Dr. Rainsford, a former Health Professions Council of Canada (HPC) president, was one of the original founding members of that body, and served as its president from 1999 to 2005.
Ms. Diane Smith, the former Health Minister, now working as a research scientist with Dr. de Villa in a laboratory funded by the National Institutes of Health. She too served as a founding member of the HPC, the predecessor organization to the Public Health Council. Ms. Smith is also a former president of the University of Guelph Faculty of Health Sciences.

Dr. George S. Chan, Toronto’s public health chief from 1995 to 2007. Dr. Chan served as the first executive officer of the Toronto Public Health Branch from 1998 to 2000, and later in the Health Unit of Toronto’s Emergency Health Services. He helped establish its Public Health Department and later, in his role as acting deputy chief, he established and led the Centre for Human Services at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.
