Serena Williams hails Tiger Woods’ influence as she continues her US Open run

Serena Williams is still on fire at the US Open after winning her second title in a row.

She opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sabine Lisicki – a former world number one – and is now one win away from a repeat of the 2009 final in which she won the whole four days from 6 September to 7 September.

She now needs one more victory in a major in the last eight weeks of the season to overtake Margaret Court – once again the best player in the world – at the top of the rankings.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said the 30-year-old. “You don’t really grow up wanting to play at the US Open. I just love the way it’s going.”

Williams has been criticised on recent tours for some of her game, in particular her service games. This has been compounded by her struggles on the hard courts at the US Open.

“I don’t think there’s been much that I’ve done better on these conditions than I did before. I don’t think I’ve ever hit a ball better. I just think my serve and my forehand, they’ve always been good.”

On what she feels when she wins a major title, Williams had this to say:

“People don’t understand because I’m not flashy or glitzy or anything like that. I’m a fun person and I really enjoy the game of tennis. I just love it. I think that’s the most important thing. People don’t understand that. I think they don’t understand the game.”

She was asked what she would do with her winning money:

“I would buy a house, I would save. I would pay off all the credit cards, credit cards are very important to me and my family – that’s important to me. I’d put it towards something like a university education, something that is very important to
