DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Alec Baldwin arrived at a Des Moines Register rally on Thursday one year after a gunman killed an actor, musician and actress during a showing of the film “The Dark Knight Rises.”
Baldwin took the stage at the rally that brought together supporters gathered in the basement of the Iowa State Capitol building, which was the scene of the Oct. 19, 2015 shooting that also injured seven people, including two young children.
His visit is not only for a fundraiser to raise awareness about gun violence but also to pay his tributes to those killed, which include director Michael Moore and actress Leslie Bibb, who was also fatally shot by the suspect, 64-year-old white supremacist James Hodgkinson. Moore and Bibb were shot in the head before being left to die on the theater floor.
The gunman, later identified as Hodgkinson, fled the theater and was eventually arrested outside, having abandoned the gun used to shoot the victims. He was convicted in 2017 of one count of malicious harassment, two counts of first-degree harassment and one count of failure to report a crime.
Baldwin, a actor and Emmy-winning writer, talked about the theater shooting and its aftermath at the campaign-style event, a fundraiser organized by Iowa Right to Life and the Des Moines Register. He spoke briefly to the crowd and was on hand during the Pledge of Allegiance while Baldwin stood in the audience with other politicians, such as Sen. John McCain of Arizona, former
